Журналист, автор постоянной колонки в нескольких крупных газетах. С консервативных позиций подвергал критике действия президента Ф. Д. Рузвельта [Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] и членов его администрации. В 1941 получил Пулитцеровскую премию [Pulitzer Prize] за разоблачительные репортажи о коррупции в руководстве профсоюзов
